WESTERNS 101: Course Syllabus

In the first of a new style of episode series we’re dubbing “Filmlings Courses,” Alex and Jonathan will be exploring the development of the Western genre as we know it today. What started as a convenient story trope to a newly created film industry in Hollywood eventually became one of the most dominant box office genres of all time. It has transcended its humble origins within a quintessentially American setting, to obtain a variety of lively incarnations in cultural cinemas around the globe.

By the end of the course, we hope you’ll have a better grasp of what makes the western so relatable to so many as well as the ability to reference the various periods and national adaptions of the genre and an understanding of how they each fed into one another.
